In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad, and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.
The bell has been rung. We have, not quite our first look, but our first full trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League. I find myself struck with one thought right off the bat; how many times are they going to make us watch Superman die? Is he on track to break Uncle Ben’s record?
The trailer gives us another great look at Darkseid and Steppenwolf’s new design. We also get another look at Batman’s Knightmare sequence from BvS, which hopefully will be more fleshed out in this version of The Justice League.
The action beats look relatively similar to what we saw back in 2017. Superman is dead, Batman is assembling the team. We catch a glimpse of Cyborg during Superman’s resurrection, and I cannot help but think that is where we will get more into his back story. I know a lot of Cyborg’s story was left on the cutting room floor. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to touching the mother box, knowing that he was “born” with one.
The crown jewel of the trailer though is Superman in his black suit. We were promised and teased of it way back in 2017 and it’s finally here. I think Henry Cavill is a great Superman. I would even go so far as to say that his performance at the end of Justice League 2017 was pretty on point for characterization. I am really excited to see him suit up as the Man of Steel again.
I should go back and amend my previous statement however, I said that the black suit was the crown jewel, but there is another glorious moment towards the end of the trailer that bares mentioning. We get a proper look at Jared Leto’s Joker, in all his dirty and grungy glory. It seems the Knightmare hasn’t been kind to the Joker’s tattoos. Perhaps all the sand and wind sandblasted them off his face? We certainly live in a society, Jered Leto, we certainly do.
